Vollmer, August (1876–1955)

US criminologist and law enforcement pioneer. He was chief of police in Berkeley, California, 1905–32, and reorganized the police department of San Diego in 1917 and Los Angeles 1923–24; he also established professional police administrations at the universities of Chicago and California. His publications include The Criminal (1949) and Crime and the State Police. He was born in New Orleans.
