Volta Redonda

Industrial city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 112 km/70 mi northwest of Rio on the Rio–São Paulo railway; population (1996) 232,287. This city, which contains one of South America's largest steel plants, stands at an altitude of 554 m/1,818 ft on a broad bend of the River Paraíba. Volta Redonda was developed after World War II to boost Brazil's industrial capacity.
