Volturno

Volturno

River of southern Italy; length 175 km/109 mi. It rises in the central Apennines and flows past Capua into the Tyrrhenian Sea 35 km/22 mi northwest of Naples. Its main tributary is the Calore.

The Italian nationalist Giuseppe Garibaldi defeated the Neapolitan army on the banks of the Volturno in 1860.
