Volwiler, Ernest H (1893–1992)

US chemist. With Donalee Tabern, he discovered Pentothal in 1936, a drug widely used for minor procedures requiring anesthesia. He was director of research at Abbott Laboratories from 1930 and became president of the company in 1950 and chair of the board in 1958.

He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, educated in Ohio and Illinois, and joined Abbott Laboratories in 1918.
