Schlieffen Plan

Military plan finalized in December 1905 by the German chief of general staff, General Count Alfred von Schlieffen, that formed the basis of German military planning before World War I, and inspired Hitler's plans for the conquest of Europe in World War II. It involved a simultaneous attack on Russia and France, the object being to defeat France quickly and then deploy all available resources against the Russians.

Although the plan was sound, it was altered by General von Moltke, who reduced the strength of the army's right wing and thus made it incapable of carrying out the plan when it was implemented 1914.
