Vonnegut, Kurt, Jr (1922–2007)US writer. His early works, Player Piano (1952), The Sirens of Titan (1959), and Cat's Cradle (1963), used the science fiction genre to explore issues of technological and historical control. He turned to more experimental methods with his highly acclaimed, popular success Slaughterhouse-Five (1969), a novel that mixed a world of fantasy with the author's experience of the fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany, during World War II. His later novels, marked by a bittersweet spirit of absurdist anarchy and folksy fatalism, include Breakfast of Champions (1973), Slapstick (1976), Jailbird (1979), Deadeye Dick (1982), Galapagos (1985), Hocus Pocus (1990), and Timequake (1997). His short stories are collected in Welcome to the Monkey House (1968) and Bagombo Snuff Box (2000). He wrote two volumes of autobiography, Palm Sunday (1981) and Fates Worse Than Death: An Autobiographical Collage of the 1980s (1992).
