Voríšek, Jan Václav

Voříšek, Jan Václav (1791–1825)

Bohemian composer and organist. He became pianist and conductor to the Philharmonic Society at Vienna in 1818 and court organist in 1823. He was an important contemporary and admirer of Beethoven and was a successful composer in a wide variety of genres.

He was taught by his father, who was a schoolmaster, and later by Václav Jan Tomášek (1774–1850). He went to Vienna in 1813 and when Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) left Vienna for Stuttgart in 1816, he recommended Voříšek as piano teacher to all his pupils.
