Voroshilov, Klement Efremovich (1881–1969)

Marshal of the USSR. He joined the Bolsheviks in 1903 and was arrested many times and exiled, but escaped. He became a Red Army commander in the civil war 1918–20, a member of the central committee in 1921, commissar for war in 1925, member of the Politburo in 1926, and marshal in 1935. He was removed as war commissar in 1940 after defeats on the Finland front and failing to raise the German siege of Leningrad. He was a member of the committee for defence 1941–44 and president of the Presidium of the USSR 1953–60.
