Vung Tau

Town and port of southern Vietnam, situated on the coast at the northern edge of the Mekong delta, 72 km/45 mi southeast of Ho Chi Minh City; population (1998 est) 152,700. It is the pilot station, fuel depot, and harbour for river traffic to Ho Chi Minh City. Vung Tau lies near the point of a peninsula extending 18 km/11 mi southwestward into the South China Sea and forming the eastern limit of Ganh Rai Bay, into which the Saigon River flows.
