Wels

Austrian town in the province of Upper Austria, on the River Traun, 25 km/16 mi southwest of Linz; population (2001) 56,500. Machinery and food are manufactured, and the town holds a regular agricultural fair. Wels has baroque buildings, a 14th-century church, and the castle where the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I died.
