Wise

Town and administrative headquarters of Wise County, extreme southwest Virginia; population (1990) 3,200. It is situated in the Cumberland Mountains, near the Kentucky state line, and 19 km/12 mi northeast of Big Stone Gap. It is a trade centre for a bituminous coal mining and agricultural region. The town is home to Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia (1954).
