Waal

River in the Netherlands; length 84 km/52 mi. The River Rhine divides, 14 km/9 mi east of Nijmegen, into the Neder Rijn and the Waal, the latter becoming the Merwede at its confluence with the Maas (see Meuse) 4 km/2 mi east of Gorinchem.
