Waechter, Eberhard (1929–1992)

Austrian baritone. He studied in Vienna, making his debut there as Silvio, in 1953. A year later he became a member of the Vienna Staatsoper. He sang in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, between 1956 and 1959, appearing as Almaviva, Amfortas, and Renato. Between 1958 and 1963 he performed at Bayreuth, making his debut as Amfortas. His New York debut was made as Wolfram in 1961, at the Metropolitan Opera House. He sang the title role in Giulini's recording of Don Giovanni. Between 1987 and 1992 he was director of the Vienna Volksoper, and was artistic co-director of the Vienna Staatsoper (1991–92). He also sang lieder (German song).
