Opera by Lortzing (libretto by the composer, based on F J W Ziegler's comedy Liebhaber und Nebenbuhler in einer Person), produced in Vienna at the Theater an der Wien on 31 May 1846. Weigl's opera Il rivale di se stesso/His own Rival, produced in Milan in 1808, was based on the same play. Marie, daughter of armourer Stadinger, is wooed by Count Liebenau in his own person and, successfully, as an apprentice smith, Conrad. Marie's father Hans Stadinger opposes the match but eventually gives in.
