Wagenaar, Bernard (1894-1971)

Dutch-born US composer. He studied with his father, Johan Wagenaar, and at the Utrecht Conservatory and learnt the violin and keyboard instruments. In 1921 he settled in New York, joined the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 1927 taught at the Juilliard Graduate School there.

Opera

the chamber opera Pieces of Eight (1944).

Orchestral

four symphonies (1926-46), sinfonietta, divertimento, Feuilleton for orchestra; violin concerto, triple concerto for flute, harp, and cello (1935).

Chamber

three string quartets (1932-60), concertino for eight instruments; violin and piano sonata, sonatina for cello; three Chinese songs for voice, flute, harp, and piano; piano sonata.

Other

Eclogue for organ; including settings of Edna St Vincent Millay.
