Wagin

Town in Western Australia, 229 km/142 mi southeast of Perth; population (1996) 1,300. Products include cereal crops, sheep, and cattle, and there is some light industry.

The town was founded in 1889 when the railway between Perth and Albany was completed. It quickly became the service centre for the surrounding agricultural district which has a reputation for its fine wools. One of Wagin's features is a 30 m/98 ft tall statue of a giant ram, on the eastern fringe of the town.
