Waikato

Region of North Island, New Zealand, to the south of Auckland city; population (1996) 357,300. The area is formed predominantly in low lying river basins, including that of the Waikato River. The rich alluvial and peaty soils support some of the richest dairy farmland and highest dairy cattle stocking densities in the world. Other economic activities include the production and processing of butter, cheese, and other dairy products. Hamilton, the largest city, is an important regional centre and is the location of Waikato University and Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre.
