Wailuku

Town and administrative headquarters of Maui County, east-central Hawaii; population (1990) 10,700. It is situated on the northeast coast of Maui Island. An 1830s missionary and educational settlement, it is a port and service centre, with a brewery and some other light industry, lying east of the west Maui mountains.

The nearby Iao Valley, dominated by the Iao Needle (height 366 m/1,200 ft), was the scene of a bloody 1790 battle between Maui warriors and the invading Hawaiian forces of Kamehameha Island.
