Waimea Canyon

Canyon extending 24 km/15 mi from north–south along the Waimea River through west Kauai Island, northwest Hawaii; maximum depth c. 1,100 m/3,600 ft. To the west is the Na Pali Coast, whose cliffs rise to a height of 1,220 m/4,000 ft. Captain James Cook made his first Hawaii landing 20 January 1778 at Waimea, located at the canyon's southern end.
