Wakayama

Seaport capital of Wakayama prefecture, Japan, 65 km/40 mi south of Osaka; population (2005) 375,600. Industries include the manufacture of steel, petrochemicals, cotton textiles, and traditional-style furniture. Tourism is important, and is based on the city castle (1585); Kimiidera, a Buddhist temple; and Wakanoura, a section of scenic coastline.

Wakayama is home to Wakayama Medical College (1945) and Wakayama University (1949).

Hiroshi Inaba, 42, who was arrested Tuesday in Osaka Prefecture over the theft in February of the life-size doll of a 6-year-old girl licking her chops, has denied part of the allegations saying the actual theft was committed by an accomplice, according to the Wakayama prefectural police.
These include Nippon Steel and Kobe Steel supplying hot-rolled steel coils to Sumitomo Metals, the joint use of iron- and steel-making facilities at Sumitomo Metals' Wakayama Steel Works, integration of some of their businesses and affiliates, and reciprocal production support among the three companies.
