Wake Island

Small Pacific coral atoll comprising three islands 3,700 km/2,300 mi west of Hawaii, under US Air Force administration since 1972; area 8 sq km/3 sq mi. It was discovered by Captain William Wake in 1841, annexed by the USA in 1898, and uninhabited until 1935, when it was made an air staging point, with a garrison. It was occupied by Japan 1941–45.
