    0.01 sec.

Wakefield, Charles Cheers, 1st Viscount Wakefield (1859–1941)

English businessman and philanthropist. He made his fortune from motor oil, founding the firm that produced Castrol lubricants in 1899. He sponsored long-distance flights in the 1930s by the pioneering aviators Jim Mollison, Amy Johnson, and Sir Alan Cobham, and also made many generous donations to educational and cultural institutions.

Wakefield's largest single endowment was of £50,000, given to the British Museum to purchase the Codex Sinaiticus bible manuscript (see Tischendorf). He also presented the Thomas à Becket cup and Admiral Lord Nelson's logbook to the nation. He was knighted in 1908, became a baron in 1930, and a viscount in 1934.
