Walcha, Helmut (1907–1991)

German organist. He studied at the Leipzig Institute but became blind a year before his debut in 1924. From 1926 he was assistant organist at the Thomaskirche, Leipzig, and from 1929 performed and taught in Frankfurt; he retired in 1972. He was best known in the organ music of Bach, all of which he recorded; he published a version of Die Kunst der Fuge/The Art of Fugue for organ. He also performed Reger, on whom he wrote a book.
