Walküre, Die

Opera by Richard Wagner, part of the cycle of music dramas Ring des Nibelungen.

The plot continues where Das Rheingold/The Rhinegold ends, as siblings Sieglinde and Siegmund meet and fall in love. The Valkyrie, Brünnhilde, disobeys Wotan by attempting to allow Siegmund to escape death; she helps Sieglinde to escape to bear her child, the future Siegfried. Wotan punishes Brünnhilde by sending her to sleep, surrounded by a ring of fire.
