Walker, Sarah (1943– )

English mezzo-soprano. She studied violin at the Royal College of Music, London. In 1970 she sang Monteverdi's Ottavia with Kent Opera and Cavalli's Diana at Glyndebourne. From 1972 she sang Dorabella, Fricka, and Mary Stuart with the English National Opera ensemble. In 1984 she sang Gloriana with the company both in London and in New York, at the Metropolitan Opera House. In 1979 she made her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, as Charlotte; she sang there again in 1985, as Handel's Micah in 1985. She has given many recitals in Europe and North America with the pianist Roger Vignoles. In 1976 she sang in the London first performance of Henze's Jephte (a realization of Carissimi). She created roles in Taverner (1972) and Buller's Bakxai (1992).
