Walker, Thomas (1715–1794)

US physician, explorer, and legislator. He was a guardian for Thomas Jefferson and, as a member of the Virginia Committee of Safety in 1776, took an active role in advancing the American Revolution.

He was born in King and Queen County, Virginia. After practising as a doctor he became interested in seeking out new land for speculation. As chief agent for the Loyal Land Company, he led explorers into present-day Kentucky 1750–51. He served numerous terms in the Virginia House of Burgesses and represented Virginia at the Fort Stanwix Indian treaty of 1768.
