Walkowitz, Abraham (c 1878-1965)

Russian-born US graphic artist and painter. A modernist, he was influenced by the French artists known as fauvists (see fauvism). Noted for his ability to use line to convey motion, he did thousands of drawings of US dancer Isadora Duncan. Walkowitz was born in Tyumen, Russia, and emigrated to New York City c. 1889. He studied at the National Academy of Design (1894 and 1898) and in Paris, France (1906-07).
