Wallat, Hans

Wallat, Hans (1929– )

German conductor. He studied at Schwerin and conducted the Opera there from 1953 until 1956. He conducted the Leipzig Opera (1958–61) and at Stuttgart (1961–64); he was music director at Bremen (1965–70) and Mannheim (1970–80). He was a guest conductor at the Vienna Staatsoper from 1968, and at Bayreuth in 1970 (with Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/The Mastersingers of Nuremberg). He made his New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, in 1971. He was music director at Dortmund (1979–85) and Deutsche Oper am Rhein 1986, with whom he conducted Schreker's Die Gezeichneten at the Vienna Festival, in 1989.
