Wallenstein, Alfred (1898–1983)

US conductor and cellist of German parentage. He studied medicine at Leipzig University, and the cello with J Klengel (1920–21). He returned to the USA and was first cello with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1922–29), and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra until 1936. He made his debut as a conductor in 1931 and was conductor of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra between 1943 and 1956. In 1952 he became music director of the Hollywood Bowl.
