Wallfisch, Raphael (1953– )

English cellist. He studied with Amaryllis Fleming, Derek Simpson, and Piatigorsky. He enjoyed a worldwide career since winning the 1977 Cassado Competition at Florence. He made his London debut in the Schumann Concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra (1974). He has given frequent chamber recitals, and performed trios with Anthony Goldstone and Ronald Thomas. He recorded concertos by Bax, Finzi, Moeran, Bliss, and Delius. His father Peter Wallfisch (1924–93) was a German-born pianist, often heard as a recitalist. His wife Elizabeth is violinist with the London Fortepiano Trio (Haydn series, 1982) and the Purcell Quartet (which made its concert debut in 1984). She plays Baroque concertos in the period style.
