Opera by Catalani (libretto by L Illica, based on W von Hillern's novel Die Geyer-Wally), produced at La Scala, Milan, on 20 January 1892. Wally is intended for Gellner but she loves Hagenbach, and after complications and reconciliation, they die together in an avalanche. Championed by Toscanini, who named his daughter Wally.
