Walney Island

Island off the coast of Cumbria, northwest England; population (2001) 11,400. It is connected by a bridge to the industrial seaport of Barrow-in-Furness, and except for the suburb of Vickerstown it is mainly an agricultural area, with some tourism.

Walney Island has at its southern tip the largest colony of gulls in Europe and is an important nesting site for the eider duck.
