Walnut Creek

City in Contra Costa County, north-central California; population (1990) 60,600. It is situated in the San Ramon Valley, 19 km/12 mi northeast of Oakland, on Walnut Creek, among deep valleys and hills, and to the northwest of Mount Diablo; height 1,174 m/3,849 ft. Fruits and walnuts are grown and processed in the vicinity. Other industries include food, chemical, and technological research and various light manufactures.

Walnut Creek was founded during the 1849 gold rush. The arrival of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1878 and a commuter line to Oakland in 1914 stimulated growth. The city grew most rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s, and has large suburban residential neighbourhoods.
