Walter, Johann

Walter, Johann (1496–1570)

German composer and bass. He sang in the service of the Elector of Saxony and in 1548 organized and directed the singers of the court chapel at Dresden. In 1554 he retired to Torgau with a pension. He was a friend of Luther and in 1524 went to Wittenberg to assist him in framing the German Protestant Mass.

Works

Magnificat, German hymns for four voices, sacred songs, some with words by Luther; instrumental pieces.
