Page, Walter Hines (1855–1918)

US editor, publisher, and diplomat. As editor of the Atlantic Monthly (1895–98), he added a political dimension to its coverage, boosting its popularity and prestige. Also a partner in Doubleday, Page & Company publishers from 1899, he served during a crucial period as US ambassador to Britain (1913–18). He was born in Cary, North Carolina.

Scholars have known for decades that Chesnutt allowed his editor at Houghton Mifflin, Walter Hines Page, to preside over the selection and organization of material for The Conjure Woman, and most critics acknowledge that Chesnutt's other masterful collection, The Wife of His Youth and Other Stories of the Color Line, was assembled under similarly haphazard circumstances.
He holds the Walter Hines Page chair at Duke University.
Kelly Wolfe, 17, of Greensboro, a volunteer with the Greensboro Chapter of the American Red Cross and a junior at Walter Hines Page High School, helped raise more than $10,000 to support victims of Hurricane Katrina by organizing a "24-Hour Swim for Relief.
