Waltham Abbey

Waltham Abbey

Market town on the River Lea, Essex, England, 20 km/12 mi north of central London; population (2001) 20,400. It is named after a church founded in 1060. Plastics and chemicals are manufactured in the area, and there are horticultural and scientific establishments.

The church of the Holy Cross at Waltham was founded, on an earlier foundation, by King Harold; Henry II converted it into a priory, and in 1184, it became an abbey.
