Wand, Günter (1912–2002)

German conductor and composer. After study in Cologne he held posts at Wuppertal and Detmold. He conducted at the Cologne Opera 1939–44 and was musical director there 1945–48. He was responsible for the Gürzenich concerts, Cologne, 1946–74, giving frequent performances of Ligeti, Varèse, and Schoenberg. London debut 1951 (with the London Symphony Orchestra at Covent Garden). He conducted the Bern Symphony Orchestra from 1974 and has been principal conductor of the Nord-Deutsche Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra (Hamburg) 1982–91.
