Wandsworth

Inner borough of southwest central Greater London

features made famous for hats in the 18th century by influx of Huguenot refugees who were skilled hatters (Roman cardinals ordered their hats from here); mills on River Wandle; Wandsworth Prison (1857); brewing industry (important since the 16th century); Battersea Park and Putney Heath are both in the borough; Battersea Power Station (1937, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott) industries light engineering, brewing, paint, candles, computers population (1991) 252,400.
