Wantage

Market town in Oxfordshire, southern England, 21 km/13 mi southwest of Oxford; population (2001) 9,800. There is trade in agricultural produce and industries include engineering; Wantage also has a number of research-and-development centres.

King Alfred the Great is believed to have been born here in AD 849.

Only one coach ran there, and this one only from Wantage to London, so that the western part of the Vale was without regular means of moving on, and certainly didn't seem to want them.
