Wapakoneta

Town and administrative headquarters of Auglaize County, west Ohio; population (1990) 9,200. It is situated on the Auglaize River, 19 km/12 mi south-southwest of Lima. Local manufactures include furnaces, furniture, mill products, plastics, and dairy products. There is also mixed farming in the area. The Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta was named after the astronaut, who was born here in 1930. The Fort Amanda State Memorial, 14 km/9 mi west of the town, marks the site of a War of 1812 fortification.
