Wappingers Falls

Community in Wappinger town, Dutchess County, southeast New York; population (1990) 4,600. It is situated in the Hudson Highlands near the Hudson River, and 11 km/7 mi south of Poughkeepsie. There are a number of light industries and business offices in the community.

The falls (height 23 m/75 ft) on Wappinger Creek have produced waterpower since settlement in the early 18th century. The headquarters of Baron von Steuben were located in Wappingers Falls during the latter part of the Revolutionary War.
