Warburton, William

Warburton, William (1698–1779)

English Anglican churchman and editor. He was a friend of the writer Alexander Pope, who made Warburton his literary executor, and he published an edition of Pope's works in 1751.

After being ordained in 1727, Warburton was a parish priest for 18 years. He then became chaplain to Frederick, Prince of Wales, and was appointed dean of Bristol in 1757 and bishop of Gloucester in 1759.
