Ware, Chris

    0.01 sec.

Ware, Chris (1967– )

US comic-book artist. His graphic novel Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth was widely acclaimed and won the 2001 Guardian First Book Award, the first graphic novel to do so. His work has been published under the title The ACME Novelty Library, which features a variety of formats and media.

He was inspired by Netherlands comic artist Joost Swarte as well as by classic US newspaper comics. Jimmy Corrigan is a story of an estranged father and son, intertwined with fantasies, historical flashbacks, and graphic innovations, creating a visually compelling narrative.

While at the University of Texas in Austin, Ware's cartoons were published in the university's The Daily Texan newspaper. Here he began developing his characters Jimmy Corrigan and Quimby the Mouse. His work was noticed by Art Spiegelman, editor of Raw magazine, who asked him to contribute to the annual. Fantagraphic Books offered Ware a regular comics series in 1994.
