Warfield, William

Warfield, William (Caesar) (1920– )

US baritone. In 1950 began a celebrated international career as a recitalist. Among his operatic roles was his lead in productions of Porgy and Bess during the 1950s, alongside his then-wife, soprano Leontyne Price. Warfield was born in Helena, Arkansas. He graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 1946. In 1974 he began teaching at the University of Illinois.
