Waring, James (1922–1975)

US modern and ballet dancer and choreographer. Trained in the Graham technique (see Martha Graham), as well as in classical ballet, he created a distinctive form of pictorial theatre for his own company (1954–69) and others. He became a major influence on postmodern dance, with Phrases and Amoretti among his best known works. Waring was born in Alameda, California.
