Warmoth, Henry Clay

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.03 sec.

Warmoth, Henry Clay (1842-1931)

US politician. A self-taught lawyer, he fought for the Union with the Missouri Volunteers (1862-65). He moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1865, where he specialized in military and government law. As the Republican governor of Louisiana (1868-72), he squandered state money on the railroads and alienated both white and black voters with his lukewarm support for civil rights. Impeached in 1872, he left public life to run his sugar plantation and refinery. Warmoth was born in MacLeansboro, Illinois.
