Warner, Charles Dudley (1829–1900)

US writer. He practised law in Chicago until 1860 before moving to Hartford, Connecticut, to work as an editor for the Evening Press (which merged with the Hartford Courant in 1867). He travelled to Europe often and wrote numerous travel sketches and essays, but is remembered now for only his first novel, The Gilded Age (1873), which he coauthored with Mark Twain.

Warner was born in Plainfield, Massachusetts. He studied at Hamilton, gaining his BA in 1851. He worked as a railroad surveyor in Missouri (1853–54), then returned to school to take a law degree at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1858.
