Washington, Denzel (1954– )

US actor. A versatile television and film performer known for his cerebral roles and intense presence in thrillers and dramas, Washington won Academy Awards in 1990 as Best Supporting Actor in the film Glory (1989) and in 2002 as Best Actor in the film Training Day (2001). He has starred in Philadelphia (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), and The Bone Collector (1999). He received Academy Award nominations for his performances in Cry Freedom (1987), Malcolm X (1992), and The Hurricane (1999).

Other films include The Pelican Brief (1993), Courage Under Fire (1996), Remember the Titans (2000), John Q (2002), (2002), Antwone Fisher (2002; also his directorial debut), Man on Fire (2002), and the remake The Manchurian Candidate (2004).
