Washington, Mount

Highest peak of the White Mountains, in north-central New Hampshire, USA. It is 1,917 m/6,288 ft high and can be ascended by a cog railway (opened 1869) and a road (1861). It is the highest peak in northeastern USA, and a popular tourist destination. There are a hotel and a meteorological station on the summit.

Wind speeds in excess of 390 km/240 mi per hour have been recorded here. The Mount Washington Observatory, radio and television transmitting facilities, a visitor centre, and a museum dot the summit.
