Wasmosy Monti, Juan Carlos

    0.01 sec.

Wasmosy Monti, Juan Carlos (1938– )

Paraguayan politician and president 1993–98. He was successful in making some improvements in national economic conditions during his term in office but came under attack for corrupt business methods.

Wasmosy came into conflict with the military during his administration, in particular with General Lino Cesár Oviedo, the head of the army.

Wasmosy was invited to stand as president in August 1993, by the Asociación Nacional Republicana (ANR; Colorado Party) after he, as a successful businessman, headed the consortium involved in the construction of the world's largest hydroelectric dam – Itaipu, bordering Paraguay and Brazil.

Wasmosy was born in Asunción, and graduated in civil engineering from the National University of Asunción in 1962.
